70 Years Statute for the Kingdom of The Netherlands

For 70 years the Statute for the Kingdom of The Netherlands has constitutionally arranged the relationships between the Netherlands in Europe and its overseas territories. This milestone deserves our comparative attention. The Statute provides a common legal framework grounded in a quest for prosperity, social justice, and peace. At the same time, the Statute’s anniversary calls for a reflection of its historical roots in colonialism and the  unique cultural, geographical, and socioeconomic context of each territory. Comparative law can help answer the legal questions that the overarching legal framework that the Statute continually raises both in the public and the private domain, such as transformative justice, fundamental rights, and the general tensions between unity and diversity.

The invited speakers include experienced scholars and magistrates, as well as younger researchers, from a variety of jurisdictions, including The Netherlands, Aruba, St Martin, Denmark, Spain, and Surinam. These speakers will address some of the aforementioned themes at the Annual Meeting of the Netherlands Association of Comparative Law, on May 8, 2024, from 13:oo to 17:00, in Utrecht, at the Achter Sint Pieter 200. The programme will be distributed shortly.

Existing and new NVvR Members will receive the resulting conference proceedings for free
